PolyKote Pro – Product Guide

Overview

PolyKote Pro is a high-performance hybrid coating engineered for exceptional durability and UV resistance. Unlike traditional epoxies that may yellow or dull over time, Savage Patriot’s PolyKote Pro delivers a long-lasting, non-yellowing finish ideal for indoor countertops and similar surfaces.  Using this product on vertical surfaces is not recommended.

  • Faster cure times: 3–5 hours to the touch

  • Working time: 30–35 minutes

  • No torching required (may be used to warm or move material if desired)

  • Superior UV resistance and flexibility compared to epoxy

  • Non-yellowing, low odor, low VOC, and easy to clean

While PolyKote Pro may cost slightly more than epoxy, its premium raw materials, long-term durability, and reduced callbacks make it a worthwhile investment for professional installers.

Product Performance

Property PolyKote Pro Typical Epoxy
Working Time 30–35 minutes 20–25 minutes
Dry to Touch 3–5 hours 8–12 hours
Elongation ~60% ~3%
UV Stability Excellent Poor
Odor Moderate Moderate
VOC Moderate Moderate

Key Takeaway: If you're experiencing ripple/crinkle issues, these are humidity + surface moisture problems. Keeping RH in the 30–50% range with a dry, temperate substrate is the “sweet spot” for smooth PolyKote Pro finishes.

Mixing & Coverage

  • Mix Ratio: 1:1 (Resin : Hardener)

  • Kit Size: 2-gallon kit

  • Coverage:

    • ~51 sq. ft. @ 4.5 oz per sq. ft.

    • ~85 sq. ft. @ 3 oz per sq. ft.

  • Maximum pour thickness: Do not exceed 4.5 oz per sq. ft. in a single pour. PolyKote Pro is not designed to do "Dirty Pours"

Mix thoroughly for 2 minutes using a jiffy mixer, taking care not to introduce air into the material.

Tinting & Additives

When tinting PolyKote or EpoxyKote, follow these guidelines:

  • Ideal range: 2–5% pigment or tint by total volume

  • Maximum: 10% (exceeding may cause curing issues or softness)

  • Pigment powders: 2–5%

  • Liquid dyes: Start lower, as some contain solvents that can affect cure

⚠️ Important: Some additives (colorants, fillers, or pigments) may not be UV-stable. Even though PolyKote Pro contains UV stabilizers, non-UV-stable additives can amber or discolor over time due to chemical reactions from UV exposure. Always use UV-stable pigments and test a small batch before full application.

Surface Preparation

  1. Sanding: Sand substrate thoroughly (100–220 grit) before and between coats.

  2. Cleaning: Ensure surface is clean, dry, and free from contaminants.

  3. Existing Smooth Surfaces: When coating MDF, laminate, Formica, granite, Corian or other smooth materials, use Behr paint and primer as a base then prime with EpoxyKote. EpoxyKote is the best primer for proper adhesion when using PolyKote as your color coating.

  4. Edges:
On both new and existing countertops, round over all edges (top and bottom, front and back). This allows PolyKote to fully wrap and anchor during curing, preventing pull-back or retraction.

  5. Seaming: Use EpoxyKote with thickener to ajoin or seam pieces together.  Avoid using Bondo on flat surfaces.  Polyester fillers, such as Bondo, continue to undergo slight post-cure shrinkages for days or even weeks.  Due to this, any "movement" underneath can telegraph through the coating via lines, bubbles, texture differences, delamination and even color shifts over time.

Application

  • Mix and tint PolyKote as desired using UV-stable additives.

  • Apply using a roller, hand spreader, or squeegee.

  • Product begins to gel in ~30 minutes, so work efficiently.

  • No flood coat required.

  • No torching required.

  • Do not use isopropyl alcohol during application.

  • For indoor use only.

Topcoat Requirement

PolyKote Pro requires a protective topcoat.
Due to polymerization, a slight orange peel texture may occur after curing. This is normal. Light sanding followed by topcoat application will level the surface and enhance protection.

Curing & Performance

  • Dry to Touch: 3–5 hours @ 70°F

  • Sandable: Next day in most cases

  • Full Cure: 20–30 days (depending on conditions)

  • Use Gently: During full cure period

Flexibility:
PolyKote Pro has approximately 60% elongation, making it far more flexible than epoxy (~3%). This flexibility prevents cracking and adds durability, though temporary indentations from heavy objects may occur and self-correct over time. Use protective pads under heavy items to prevent long-term impressions.

Storage & Shelf Life

  • Store in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight.

  • Keep containers tightly sealed after use.

  • Shelf life: 1 year from manufacture date (unopened).

Cleaning

Clean tools and equipment immediately after use with isopropyl alcohol to prevent hardening.

Safety Precautions

  • Keep out of reach of children.

  • Use in a well-ventilated area.

  • Wear protective gear (gloves, goggles, respirator).

  • If product contacts eyes or is ingested, seek medical attention immediately.

  • Reactions or sensitivities may vary by individual.
